Awareness is the Key! Initiatives by Shanti Bhavan Medical Center

In 2025, in Jharkhand alone 4,078 people were bitten by snakes; 27 reportedly died. Superstitions are rampant about snakes. Many non-poisonous snakes are killed. Many people die out of fear.

Shanti Bhavan Medical Center successfully conducted a series of Basic Life Support (BLS), Snake Bite Management, and Trauma Transport Training Programmes across TEN blocks of Simdega District, Jharkhand, between 15th April and 8th May 2026. 

The initiative was organised in close coordination with the District Administration, Police Department, Block Development Officers (BDOs), healthcare personnel, Anganwadi workers, Sahiyas, Panchayat representatives and other community stakeholders.

The programme aimed to strengthen grassroots emergency response capacity by equipping frontline workers and community representatives with essential life-saving skills. Training sessions covered CPR, trauma handling, snake bite first aid, patient stabilization and emergency transport protocols, with emphasis on practical and locally relevant responses to emergencies

A total of 1,459 participants attended the programmes conducted across ten locations in the district. The majority of participants were frontline community health and welfare workers, including Sevikas, Sahiyas, Anganwadi workers and Jal Sahiyas, reflecting strong grassroots participation and community ownership of the initiative.

The programmes received highly positive feedback from participants, many reported this was their first exposure to structured emergency response and life-saving training.

The entire training team was felicitated by the Superintendent of Simdega Police at the conclusion.
